I have a '95 maroon savage which also has a lot of fading on the top of the tank and also on the front fender...I've only had a few months, and was like this when I bought it, but I suspect you're probably right about the paint, fades badly from the sunlight. I plan on repainting when I get the chance (need to fix a few dings also).
